Where To See and Be Seen This Winter: Washington DC’s Restaurants and Bars

When it comes to world leaders, DC is the absolute hub. Unfortunately for DC, World leaders and its power players are more often than not physically unappealing (great personalities though, I’m sure!). Once referred to as the Hollywood for ugly people, the political side is only a small albeit mighty side of this bustling town. If you can expand your scope past the National Mall, you’ll discover a stylish creative set amongst the snoozy types. With a constant influx of celebs, athletes, and musicians in town, there is only one question left to ask: Where are all the relevant people in DC?

The New Cool Kid: Manifest

Manifest. 1807 Florida Ave., NW.

Those flying into DCA for an evening of entertainment or sports need to look no further than K.J. Hughes, Manifest. The one stop shop features a barbershop, boutique, and the hidden speakeasy, Out of Office, if you’re lucky enough to be invited in. Don’t let its maximalist services deter you however, for nothing can quite trump the minimalist atmosphere of its Snarkitecture designed interiors.

The Only Nobu Without Paparazzi

Nobu DC 2525 M St NW, Washington, DC 20037 (Neighborhood: West End)

The Nobu brand is basically a comfort blanket to our favorite A-listers. Even those who are adventurous in their palette often fall back on the consistency of a restaurant chain that serves exactly the same food at each and every one of their doors. It’s sort of like going to McDonalds when traveling abroad! Let’s just say everyone’s favorite Kardashian is often found quickly dining here before hopping back on KIM AIR. With enough lychee martini’s to go around and a surprising absence of paparazzi at the door, this may be the most celebrated Nobu yet!

Shmoozing Dinner: Taberna Del Alabardero

Taberna Del Alabardero -

1776 I St NW, Washington, DC 20006

There’s a reason why Taberna Del Alabardero has been around since 1989 in a city that has a revolving door of politicians and restaurants. The secret seems to be in their knowledge of key power players and the uncanny ability to create a table for an important diner despite a packed restaurant. Not to mention, their authentic selection of tapas can make Madrid’s own Santiago Cabanas and Sol Oyarzun truly at home. With its prime location just a stones throw from the White House, don’t be surprised if you accidentally bump First Lady Jill on your way out.

Old Faithful: Fiola Mare

Fiola Mare - 3050 K Street NW, Suite 101, Washington DC 20007 (Enter at 31st Street & waterfront)

Fiola Mare was one of the first restaurants Mr. M took me to in DC. Situated right on the water, it has an old school coastal Italian elegance that I haven’t seen from other restaurants in the area. Set with white and blue interiors, romantically lit with perfected evening light, its a perfect venue for date nights. I’m a personal fan of its Valet service and creative cocktails (see image). It’s a definitely not as low-key as the other places on our list, but worth it if you love a creative cocktail, fresh seafood, and candle lit ambience. Stay late enough and you’ll find yourself sipping vintage champagne with the enigmatic owner Maria.

The Upscale Rebel: Shoto

Shoto - 1100 15th St. NW. (Entrance on L Street NW.)

From the moment you walk into Shoto, you feel a pulse running through your body. Maybe its the high volume South Beach-esque soundtrack that’s bumping throughout its hidden speakers, or the mix of a glitzy stylish crowd that is seeing to be seen at its bar. Whatever the reason, I’m here for it. The restaurant is held under the same ownership of the Zuma Restaurant Brand, which means it appeals to an international jet-set crowd. The music is loud, the IG appeal is nice, and the food is actually really good. It’s the ideal place to get a little tipsy with your friends sort of like you’re at a club, without the sweaty strangers.
