Best Hidden Boutiques of the World

There is something truly magical that can occur when shopping in a store that can never be replicated with online shopping. I grew up in the world of experiential shopping - from Neiman Marcus to Barneys, there was always a new world to discover each time I walked into a store. Now as an adult, Mr. M and I love to travel and discover new stores around the world that we never knew existed. We love those special places that tell a unique story thats specific to that town, with products that are exclusive to the store or boutique. As we live evermore in a digital world, there’s something so alluring about items that only exist in the physical stores and not online.

Below, Mr. M and I are sharing with you some of our favorite hidden boutiques around the world where we find incredible one of a kind items.

One summer day in NYC, Marlon and I stumbled across this gentlemen’s boutique while on the hunt for oversized bowties. One could easily spend hours in the store searching through the treasure trove of wonderful finds sure to peak any gentleman’s curiosities. The store is filled with a mix of ties, hankies, pins, hats, stamps, coins, clothing, and Ivy League motifs. Marlon bought me a great US Open crewneck sweater from the year I was born!

Cutter Brooks

Address: The Square, Stow-on-the-Wold, Cheltenham GL54 1AB, United Kingdom

Founded by Amanda Cutter Brooks, this store is a must visit when in the UK. Amanda was previously the Fashion Director at Barneys, and although I never worked directly with her at Barneys, I met her through Laura Stoloff (who was the Asst. Fashion Director when I got hired and had gone onto being an editor at WSJ mag and a fashion stylist). At the time, Amanda was looking for an intern to help her with some administrative tasks for her book, Always Pack a Party Dress, so we worked remotely on it. It was a labor of love, and incredibly insightful. I've always admired Amanda's style and elegance and can understand her desire for a beautiful timeless life in the country.

Of course, we couldn't leave off one of our favorite hidden gems in our little corner of the world. Creme de la Creme is a homey lifestyle store that has a wide range of serving plates and table trinkets for all your post COVID entertaining dreams. There's also a fabulous little bookstore nook in the back with some beautiful literature for those of you who have any empty table space. Its the perfect place to find a gift for a hostess, or be inspired to write a letter to someone you really love.

Deyrolle

Address: 46 Rue du Bac, 75007 Paris, France

When stepping into Deyrolle, you will find a store of curiosities. It is the most famous taxidermy shop in the world, but also serves as an educational treasure trove on taxidermy, entomology and natural sciences. As stated on their website, “At Deyrolle, no animal has been killed to be naturalized: animals of non-domestic species come from zoos, parks or farms where they died of old age or disease. They are traceable, and protected species are held and delivered in accordance with the Washington Convention (CITES)."

While you can buy the exotics, there's no way to import them into America. Rumor has it, a very famous model once tried by hiding a purchase in her LV trunk on a private plane but was unsuccessful.
