“Toi et moi” in French translates to “you and me”, how romantic! “Toi et moi” is also the style of ring that has been bursting back onto the scene in recent years, where the ring features two stones, symbolic of two people coming together. While many of you likely give Emily Ratajkowski credit for the emergence of a “toi et moi” engagement ring, her ring merely rebirthed the popularity of the enchanting style. One of the earliest mentions of a “toi et moi” ring dates back to 1796, when Napoleon Bonaparte, the revolutionary soldier in the French army, proposed to his first wife, Josephine de Beauharnais, a gorgeous “toi et moi ring”. In 2013, the ring sold for just under $1 million at a French auction house, but alas the ring style was born and is more prominent now than ever.
Since Josephine de Beauharnais, fabulous women have donned a “toi et moi” ring such as Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and our RH favorite, Jackie O. It wasn’t until 2018 when Sebastian Bear-McClard proposed to his then girlfriend and now wife, Emily Ratajkowski that we see the style re-enter the celebrity stratosphere and thus back into pop culture and all over our Instagram feeds. In 2020 Ariana Grande announced her engagement to her now husband with a snap of her “toi et moi” ring which features a pearl thought to be from her late grandfather next to a sizable oval shaped diamond.
On November 2nd, 2021, Kylie Jenner shared with her 302m followers a pic her and daughter Stormi’s matching “toi et moi” diamond rings gifted by partner Travis Scott captioned, “daddy got us matching rings”, and to kick off 2022, Machine Gun Kelly proposed to Megan Fox with a “toi et moi” emerald and diamond ring.
