The Great Sport of Golf and it’s Associated Cocktails

A little fun in the sun is nothing without a cool refreshing beverage to sip on. For golfers, and the golf enthusiasts, there are a bevy of bevies one can partake in. See below a list of the tried-and-true cocktails associated with the outdoor sport.

The John Daly

An Arnold Palmer is probably the most classic golf-related beverage, and some may be drinking an Arnold Palmer without even knowing who the golfer was. If you’re planning to rev up your game, try spiking the AP with a little sauce. Now you’ve made yourself a John Daly.

Recipe: Pour 1.5 oz. of vodka, 2 oz. of lemonade, and 2 oz. of sweet tea into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake then strain into a tall glass over ice.

The Azalea

Inspired by the pink flowers that bloom every April at Augusta National Golf Club where the Masters Tournament is held, the pretty pink drink aptly called The Azalea has become the unofficial drink of the biggest golf tournament in the US. Insider tip: The Azalea pairs surprisingly well with pimento cheese sandwiches.

Recipe: Pour 2 ozs. vodka, 2 ozs. pineapple juice, 1 oz. lemon juice and a spoonful of grenadine into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake then strain into a tall glass over ice. Garnish with lemon.

The Bobby Jones

Who is Bobby Jones? I mean, does it really matter if the drink is good and easy to make? Upon further review, we’ve discovered that good ‘ole Bob is apparently a founder of Augusta and the masters with an inspired cocktail.

Recipe: Fill a cocktail shaker with 4-5 ice cubes. Add 1.5 oz. of brandy, ½ oz. of crème de cacao, and 1/4s tsp of grenadine. Squeeze in some fresh lemon juice and shake away. Strain this mixture into a chilled tumbler and drink to a legend.

The Birdie

If you are a chilled martini glass on a golf course kind of gal, then I want to be your friend. Nothing screams over the top extra-ness like a chilled martini glass in the scorching sun. Let’s hope your golf game is just as decadent as your drinks game and remember you can’t birdie them all if you don’t birdie the first.

Recipe: Pour 1.5 oz. of your favorite gin, 0.5 oz. of St. Germain, 0.5 oz. of lime juice, a dash of simple syrup, and five fresh mint leaves. Throw it all together in a Boston shaker, with ice. Shake furiously for 10 seconds, followed by a double strain into a chilled martini glass.

The Renee Powell

To be honest, we were a little tired of reading about all these male golfers and their inspired drinks, so we decided to make our own named after the legendary golfer Renee Powell. Let’s just say if anyone deserves a delicious cocktail named after them, it's Renee. Besides being the second black woman to play in the LPGA, she also owns a country club - hello, we’d like to join! This one’s for you Renee!

Recipe: Put a splash of lemon juice and 3 basil leaves with ice in a cocktail shaker and shake well to bruise the basil. Add in 2 oz. of Hendricks Gin and shake again. Strain the flavored gin into a to-go glass and top with more ice and top with 4 oz. of tonic. Grab that roadie and hit the links!
