The RH Guide To Positano And Capri
It’s officially that time of year when you go onto Instagram and see that all your friends are off gallivanting around Europe and you think to yourself, ‘what am I still doing here?!’ With all of our favorite or not so favorite celebs and influencers taking off to the sunny southern coast of Italy, it’s only right for the RH team to provide a well vetted guide to Positano and Capri, so all you have to do is book it and go.
Every spot on the itinerary has been personally scouted and is RH approved!
Getting There
Fly from USA -> Rome’s Leonardo Da Vinci International Airport
Traveling to Europe is easier now than it’s been in years, thanks covid, and you no longer need to show a negative test to enter just your vaccination card! Unfortunately, you still have a long flight ahead of you and a time difference to battle on the other side, but if you book an evening flight out of the United States to Italy, you can sleep on the plane and arrive partially ready for the fun ahead.
Day 1
Arrive in Rome
We personally like to have a buffer in place and ease into the vacation, so we highly recommend staying at the La Posta Vecchia Hotel your first night in Italy.
La Posta Vecchia Hotel is a five-star hotel roughly 30 minutes away from the airport and was a Renaissance villa for the noble Orsini family and home to John Paul Getty, a billionaire who filled it with Italian art treasures. The estate is right on the coast offering its guests an incredible view and fabulous place to lounge off any fatigue or jet lag.
Day 2 – 4
Positano
You can get to the Amalfi coast several different ways, including via helicopter (La Posta Vecchia has a helipad on the premise), car, or train. If you are interested in taking a car, the hotel can help to arrange transportation for your roughly 4-hour drive. If you prefer a more economical option, take the train! The hotel can arrange for a taxi to take you to the train station in Rome where you will take a train to the Amalfi coast, which takes roughly 1.5 hours.
Where To Stay In Positano
Le Sirenuse is a five-star hotel nestled right into Positano’s famous cliffs offering its guests a spectacular view of the Mediterranean Sea and easy access to the shops, beaches, and restaurants! You have without a doubt seen is beautiful brick red facade in the background of many of your social media favorites. Although the abundantly photographed clientele would normally be a deterrent for us, the intimate hospitality of this hotel is one that feels like you’re staying amongst close friends. The details of the hotel are also truly standout; beautifully bound mini booklets provide a wealth of information on the hotel, its services, and the town of Positano itself. Le Sirenuse features a small pool and active fitness room, but with the city bursting with culture and characters, we recommend skipping these amenities and hitting the local lidos.
If you are traveling with a group or children, AirBnb’s are always a fabulous option and we stayed at this incredible Airbnb that offers its guests two queen sized beds, two ensuite bathrooms, a kitchen, terrace draped with purple bougainvillea and so much more! Just up the street a few steps is a grocery store where you can stock up on food, drinks, and snacks.
Where To Eat In Positano
Da Adolfo is a spectacular little family-owned restaurant on the beach, perfect for lunch, just a short boat ride away from the main dock in Positano. Do not worry, the restaurant has their own boats to take their visitors back and forth free of charge! Remember to bring your bathing suit, and an empty stomach so you can lounge at their private beach and sneak up to the restaurant for a delicious meal.
Conca Del Sogno is a hotel, beach club and restaurant that is a must-visit while on the Amalfi Coast! Enjoy a day at their beach club and pop up to the restaurant to retreat from the sun and eat delicious plates of fresh seafood, pasta and so much more. The energy of the music and the staff feels like you’ve found a hidden party in a cliffside grotto. Be sure to book ahead if you would like to enjoy the beach club or the restaurant as it is also a hotel, and we want to make sure you have a chair!
Regardless of if you are staying at Le Sirenuse hotel or not, dinner at the hotel’s restaurant, La Sponda, is a spectacular experience under the candle lights. With hundreds of candles suspended in the air and live music, it is the ultimate romantic evening, and the food is equally divine.
Whenever we travel and see that there is an Eden Roc location, you know it is going to be spectacular and their destination in Positano is no exception. On the property is the beautiful Adamo & Eva Restaurant, featuring a menu fully inspired by the Mediterranean, featuring fresh fish, local produce, and the most divine tiramisu.
What To Do In Positano
The activity options are endless in Positano, so you certainly won’t find yourself being bored. Enjoy a day at a beach club, shop at hundreds of boutiques, go for a hike, or rent a boat! However you decide to spend your time while in Positano, soak in the beautiful views as much as possible.
Day 4-7
Capri
Arrive to Capri via boat from the main dock in Positano. You can take a ferry or charter a private transport and see the famed sights on your way. Either way you are in for a treat on the other side of the boat ride! Once you arrive on Capri, you’ll walk into an area bustling with canopied convertible taxis that are ready to take you to your lodging. Non-residential vehicles are not allowed on Capri from mid-March through October, but the taxis are fantastic so be sure to take advantage of the vibrant vehicles.
Where To Stay In Capri
We are a huge fan of J.K. Place properties, J.K. Place Capri is impeccable, just like the rest of their locations. It is a five-star boutique hotel that will make you feel right at home the moment you step onto the premise. Featuring a panoramic view of the Bay of Naples, a stunning swimming pool, tennis court and so much more, there are endless amenities for you to enjoy.
Punta Tragara is a Manfredi Hotel and features the most spectacular view of the Faraglioni! The hotel has funky and fun décor (perfect for a great unique Instagram shot that not every Capri visitor will have access to), two swimming pools, and plenty of other offerings for you to take advantage of.
Where To Eat in Capri
Gennaro Amitrano is a Michelin star restaurant on the island of Capri right by Marina Piccola, offering its visitors a fantastic view of the water and an abundance of delicious treats. We highly recommend the tasting menu which will absolutely fill you up with incredible food; they even have something they called ‘pre dessert’ which was a little dessert before the real dessert! Doesn’t get much better than that.
For a chill lunch vibe, you won’t find a tastier option than the chill Lo Scoglio delle Sirene! We sat here for hours enjoying fresh oven made pizza, bowls of linguine with clams, and so much more. It is a very relaxed atmosphere with fun music, happy waitstaff and great vibes all around.
You have seen it on Instagram, no doubt, but it is worth the hype! La Fontelina is a beach club and restaurant only accessible via long walk or boat, but worth the trip and once you see it in person you will know why. Not only is the beach club perched atop the sea cliffs, but it is only beach club where you can laze on a sun lounger opposite the Faraglioni and then jump right into the sea. Not to mention, the food is delicious, and the restaurant ambiance is fabulous. If you do not want to enjoy the beach club, you can just make a reservation for lunch.
What To Do In Capri
Capri is an amazing little island with incredible wonders to explore. If you haven’t yet, you absolutely must charter a boat for the day to explore the hidden nooks on the island and its surrounding area. Your boat captain should bring you to the many gorgeous grottos where the sea has eroded natural caves into the island. We suggest skipping the overly hyped blue grotto for the green grotto, a vibrant cave where you may just expect to see the shimmer of a mermaid tail. Next to see is the Faraglioni arch, where you can actually go under the arch depending on your boat’s size. Another important site to see are Li Galli, where mermaids were once depicted to live in Homer’s Odyssey and where Lebron James is rumored to have sheltered in place for 4 weeks. Lastly, the most important thing to do is to take a leap of faith into the crystal blue waters. With its high salt content, the sea will carry any swimmer and help you work up your appetite for the prosciutto and melon plate you’ll enjoy while you sunbathe yourself dry.
The city center, referred to as La Piazzetta, is a beautiful place to wonder through the shops, eat and people watch. You must also make time to stop and get your custom sandals made at the Canfora shoe shop. The shoe makers were made famous by Jackie Kennedy Onassis who wore the brands many sandals on her Italian jaunts. Other great stores to stop by are Chanel and Bottega Veneta whose small boutiques have a carefully curated selection of the luxury brands’ overall collections with a focus on resort-wear and exclusive to the island items.
