A Top-Secret List of Every Female Member at Augusta National Golf Club

It’s no secret that Augusta National is one of the most exclusive golf clubs in the world. In fact, membership at the National is only offered by invitation only. Notable members of Augusta include Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, and Peyton Manning. The club only recently welcomed its first African American member, Ron Townsend, in 1990. Over two decades later, women were finally considered for membership. Although we’re not exactly sure how many women are current members at Augusta, we’re certain that there are at least six of them who we can look up to.

1.     Condoleezza Rice

Condoleezza Rice was one of the first two women to be invited to join Augusta National in 2012. America knows her as the former Secretary of State during the George W. Bush administration, but she is also an accomplished academic—she is a professor at Stanford University and serves as Director of the Hoover Institution. Her first time picking up a golf club was the summer after she became the Secretary of State. “I’m glad to see that women’s golf is really getting to play now some of the iconic golf courses in America. I think it’s really important that the women’s game makes that next step,” she says.

2.     Darla Moore

Darla Moore, “The Toughest Babe in Business” according to Fortune magazine, became a member of Augusta with Condoleezza Rice in 2012. Moore initially studied political science and briefly worked for the Republican National Committee before earning an MBA and redirecting her career to finance. Due to her demanding career and philanthropic endeavors, she admits that her “golf game needs work.” When asked if she would “push for more female members,” she stated that she probably would not, since she is “a member, not an advocate.”

3.     Ginni Rometty

Virgina “Ginni” Rometty became the third female member of Augusta National in 2014, following her appointment as IBM’s first female CEO in 2012. Historically, all IBM CEOs have been offered membership, so of course Rometty was no exception. However, it took them two years to deliver the well-deserved invitation. Ginni studied computer science and electrical engineering on a scholarship while interning for General Motors. Then, she worked as a systems analyst and systems engineer for IBM before working her way up to the glass ceiling.

4.     Diana Murphy

Diana Murphy became the fourth female member at Augusta in 2018, after two one-year terms as the U.S. Golf Association’s president. Murphy inspired inclusivity and innovation during her time as president by revising the Rules of Golf, encouraging participation in LPGA-USGA Girls Golf, and considering the benefits of science in golf through partnerships with research universities such as the University of Minnesota. She even ran her own private equity firm, Rocksolid Holdings, where she is still Managing Director.

5.     Ana Patricia Botín

Ana Patricia Botín is the fifth woman to join Augusta National Golf Club and is also the first Spanish woman to do so. Botín studied economics at Bryn Mawr, then attended Harvard Business School. She worked for J.P. Morgan in the U.S. before returning to Spain to serve on the board of Santander Group. Botín has been Santander’s Executive Chairman since 2014. She recently Tweeted, “#ThisLittleGirlIsMe at 12. I wanted to be a pro-golfer, then a journalist. Today I am at @bancosantander. My advice to my younger self: when you find your purpose and passion, learn how to enjoy the journey.”

6.     Heidi Ueberroth

Heidi Ueberroth is the sixth and last woman to be admitted into the Augusta National Golf Club, that we know of. Her father is Peter Ueberroth, the former commissioner of Major League Baseball and co-chairman of Pebble Beach Co., which owns Pebble Beach Golf Links in California. Heidi was president of NBA International before becoming president at Globicon, “a private investment and advisory firm focused on media, sports, entertainment and hospitality industries.” According to her former boss Adam Silver, “Heidi can drive the ball 280 yards and she’s been successful in an industry largely dominated by men.”
