Chasing after JAR
It only takes one person to introduce you to Joel Arthur Rosenthal, also known as JAR. For me, JAR became a coveted reality when my former boss at Barneys New York, Marina Larroude, began planning her Paris Fashion Week schedule. “I have to make time to stop by JAR” she said over a scheduling meeting with our fashion office. The conversation peaked my interest, since JAR could have meant anything, but it was Marina and she was always on the pinnacle of what was fashionable. Many years, and many google searches later, I understand the celebrated desire for JAR. I love his story of coming up in the Bronx, studying at Harvard and maintaining a very low profile despite his fame. I love the secrecy and exclusivity around buying new pieces at his Place Vendome store (which I have walked by multiple times without noticing!).
Now, we should discuss the work. JAR only releases some 100 one of a kind pieces every year although there are a handful that circulate in public auctions like 1stDibs and Christies from time to time. His pieces are sculptural, sometimes over the top, but always unique. For someone being introduced into the fine jewelry space, buying a JAR piece is not like buying a classic, timeless, piece of jewelry. You wouldn’t be able to wear it everyday, (unless you lived an incredibly fabulous life and, if so, you go girl) and when you do wear it, you will stand out. They are the precious pieces that you look forward to wearing for an event, or moment, making life just a little bit more fun.
